Today I interviewed Nicole LeFavour who was the first openly gay politician in Idaho. She served in the Idaho House of Representatives from 2004-2008 and served as an Idaho State Senator from 2008-2012. She is actively involved in the Add The Words campaign to update the Idaho Human Rights Act to include the language sexual orientation and gender identity in order to address all Idaho citizen including those who are gay or transgender, and she has been arrested numerous times as a result of those efforts. As part of her community service for those arrests she began collecting LGBT oral histories which she has generously offered to donate to my Idaho’s LGBTQ Community project. She grew up in Custer County then moved to California to go to college at UC Berkeley before coming back to Idaho. She didn’t come out until she was in her thirties. Her insight into the Idaho political system is outstanding including thoughts on Larry Craig and Trump.
