Judge Ryan gave Kelly Schneider the maximum sentence in Canyon County Court this morning. According to the plea agreement the minimum he could serve for the murder of Steven Nelson could be as little as ten years and the maximum twenty eight years before being eligible for parole. The judge called Schneider’s actions evil and gave him life with eligibility for parole after twenty eight years. Steven’s father, sister, and three brother gave heart breaking victim impact statements. I had lunch with them after and got to reminisce about good times with Steven who had such an awesome sense of humor. The family has to attend another sentencing tomorrow for a different co-defendant (who will likely appeal because it was a jury trial), the federal sentencing for Schneider’s hate crime, and two more sentencings for additional co-defendants. They have to re-live the brutal crime each time they give their statements. I wish them peace in the near future.
